Drive the Apache Trail

Stay at Desert Shadows RV Resort and take the most scenic drive in Phoenix, Arizona. The historic Apache Trail is located just east of Phoenix, and makes a great day trip when you’re staying at Desert Shadows RV Resort.

The Apache Trail offers views of canyons, desert trees, plants, flowers and geological formations. There are many stops and attractions on the trail that you can visit or if you’d like just drive straight through the trail. This trail is winding and narrow at some places and RVs are not recommended, so take your car or rent one for the day.

Stops on the drive include the Goldfield Ghost Town, which used to be a thriving town but is now a tourist attraction. Walk down Main Street past historic buildings and shops and stop by The Mammoth Steakhouse & Saloon for lunch.

Canyon Lake is another scenic stop and is a great place to take pictures or take the 90-minute Dolly Steamboat tour. There is also a restaurant and shop at the marina.

And Tortilla Flat is a great place to stop and get some ice cream, buy a souvenir or a packet of the “Killer Chili” in a town with a population of 6.

Driving past Tortilla Flat and Fish Creek Hill can be a very challenging road, so many tourists turn around and head back to town at this point. Drive slow, stop only at designated lookouts or towns and don’t forget your camera! The Apache Trail is a great day trip for guests of Desert Shadows RV Resort, and is a great activity in the summertime when you can keep your car AC running and stay out of the heat.
